Get Better Indoor Air Quality
While winter is the season for fuzzy socks, snuggling, hot chocolate, and ice skating, it’s also the season for allergies. If you think staying indoors will solve that problem, you could be very wrong. The stale indoor conditions brought by winter can increase dust, mold, pet dander, and other allergens circulating throughout your house. However, there are efforts that can be taken to improve your indoor air quality and eliminate allergies.
1. Keep A Clean Home
Keeping a clean home is important for reducing the number of allergens lurking in your home. Regular dusting can help prevent buildup, and it’s important to remember to dust all areas of your home. This includes door frames, window sills, countertops, mirrors, and any other flat surfaces. Vacuum and sweep at least once a week, and reduce clutter in your home. Lastly, regularly wash bedding as it can attract and hold dust mites, pet hair, and other allergens.
2. Change Filters
Filters aid in the cleanliness of air that passes through our heating and air conditioning systems, into our homes. The longer you go without changing them, the dirtier they become, and if your filter gets clogged with debris, you’ll experience weakened air flow, and the conditioned air you do get will likely be unclean. Change your filter every 1-3 months; more often with allergy sufferers and pets in the household.
3. Check Your Ductwork
Ducts can become polluted with dust over time if the filter isn’t changed regularly. Ensure your ducts are clean by calling a professional to do the work. Also, ask them to do an inspection to ensure there are no loose ends or cracks in the ductwork where air could be entering the system past the filter. Clean ductwork will help to keep a clean home.
4. Get Preventative Maintenance Performed on Your HVAC System
Just like your car, your home’s HVAC system requires regular maintenance and tune-ups. We always recommend our customers enroll in our Proactive Performance Program (PPP), which offers many great benefits for your home, including making sure your HVAC system is performing optimally year round.
We have several maintenance program levels available to choose from, so there is sure to be a package that fits the needs of your family and budget. The Optimum Plan is our most popular, and includes two visits to your home per year to make sure your cooling and heating equipment is functioning properly. We also perform a long checklist of home health priorities, including checking filters, air purifiers, and all electrical wiring.
