How To Start Your Own Garden This Spring

Thinking about gardening but don’t know where to start? We get it. There’s a lot that goes into having a garden, especially getting it started! However, if you’re interested in sustainable food options for you and your family, or a way to pass the time relaxing and taking in the beauty of nature, a garden might just be the perfect new hobby for you. By following these simple tips, you can start your own garden this spring!

Making Space

Before you start digging up dirt like crazy, take time to map out your available space. It’s important to select plants which make sense for your yard. If you only have a small plot available, you can still start a garden! Just stay away from pumpkins, corn, or other plants which take up a lot of room. Instead, look into plants which grow vertically such as sunflowers, perennials tomatoes, beans, or peas.

Examining the Climate

Some plants just don’t do well in certain climates. If you purchase the wrong plants for your area, they’re going to struggle no matter what you do. Figure out your estimated frost dates and average temperatures. If you have a local gardener friend or family member, be sure to ask them for their opinions on which plants do well in your area, or visit a local plant nursery to get some great advice. If you live in Northwest Florida, the Emerald Coast Nurseryis a great option!

Picking the Perfect Spot

Most vegetables require full sun, so if you’re planning to have lots of those, locate a spot which receives direct sunlight throughout most of the day. It’s important to also ensure your hose can reach your garden to water your plants. If it can’t, it may be worth investing in a longer hose to reach the perfect spot in your yard. Refilling the watering can countless times will get old quickly! Try planning your garden out on paper to choose which plants and how many of them will fit in the space. This way you won’t feel overwhelmed or unprepared when you arrive at your local plant nursery.

Choosing Plants

Here comes the fun part: choosing your plants! You don’t have to only stick to vegetables, you can add flowers and other decorative plants into the mix. To get the best of both worlds, research edible flowers which grow well in your area. Garnishing dishes with these homegrown edible flowers can take your dinner nights to the next level.
