Don’t Do-It-Yourself: DIY Projects Homeowners Should Avoid
As cooler weather and the holiday season approaches, we often find ourselves spending more time indoors. Some of us may get a little stir crazy and begin DIY projects around the house. While DIY projects are great, here are some projects you should leave to the professionals.

Electrical Work
While there are some simple electrical tasks that are fair game for do-it-yourselfers, most should be left to professionals. It is a relatively easy process to upgrade already existing devices and fixtures, but when it comes to extending or adding new electrical circuits, don’t do it alone. By taking on electrical tasks you always run the risk of getting shocked or starting fires. A licensed, experienced electrician can quickly and safely complete the task, following protocols to stay safe. There are also many strict codes involved in electrical work, and violating any with your DIY attempt could mean trouble.

Tree Removal or Cutting
When it comes to large trees, never attempt to trim sky high branches or cut the tree down by yourself. These tasks carry a high risk and aren’t worth the potential savings of not calling a professional tree company. Branches are often much heavier than they look, and can come down with a lot of momentum. Additionally, cutting down tree trunks entirely is an unpredictable process to those who are not experienced. Stay safe and get in touch with the pros.

HVAC Work
We often discuss many DIY HVAC tips for homeowners to help you save money and time when possible. Chores such as replacing your system’s filter or cleaning up your air vents are great options to DIY. However, this does not mean that all tasks are suitable for the average Joe. Leave it to experienced technicians to clean coils, test system performance, check refrigerant charges, maintain air ducts, and inspect any electrical work in your HVAC system. These jobs are not something to attempt on your own. Signing up for our Proactive Performance maintenance plan is a great preventative option to cover many of the above listed tasks.

Roofing
Attempting to DIY your roofing is something you should avoid altogether. There is really no benefit financially or time wise, and you could be putting yourself in harm’s way. Nobody who is inexperienced should be climbing on the roof of a home or other building. More likely than not, the process will also take longer than you plan, won’t look as good as a professional job, and could increase the risk of underlying problems. When it comes to choosing roofing professionals, be sure to do your research on reputable companies, and ask around for recommendations, if possible. You’ll want to make sure they’re licensed and insured before doing any work.
